Heather and Mel chatting with entrepreneurs, freelancers and others to go over Gliffen’s Tips & Tricks from Web Designers. We went over Do-It-Yourself website building steps verses hiring a professional. There are clearly pros and cons on both sides but no matter what route you decide to take it, this information is important to keep in mind.
Some key points:
- Do you research on what’s the right web builder for you and your technical capabilities
- When picking a domain name consider your business name, your industry, location, short and sweet URL as a secondary domain name, including keywords too
- Setup your email – we recommend Google Apps for Work instead of forwarders
- Resize your images to a reasonable size for web use
- Use your Headings: h1, h2, h3, h4, h5; they are meant to use for distinguish importance. Search engines understand these prior levels within your text content.
- It comes in handy to know some HTML & CSS
- Have access to ALL YOUR ACCOUNTS no matter who/if you hire someone to help you
Website Terminology:
- Sitemap: A list of pages that make up your website.
- Mobile-Responsiveness: A website that responses to the devices it’s viewed on like a tablet, smartphone, etc.
- Content Management System (CMS): A dynamic website that is normally data base driven and enables the owner/user to manage the content of their own website (make changes) without needing to know any coding at all.
- Cache: Cache stores data so future requests for that data can be served faster. The data stored ins a cache might be the results of an earlier version, so it’s important to clear the cache periodically. There are user and server caches.
- FTP: The software program that you use to upload your website to a host server.
- Favicon: Favicons are tiny (generally 16 x 16 pixels, some are 32 x 32 pixels), customizable icons displayed in the web address bar in most browsers next to the web address.
