This article covers the basics of setting up a personal domain name for your Duck Soup Tools website.
Setting up a personal domain name allows you to use your own domain name as the primary location for your website. Your personal domain name will replace the standard subdomain that comes with your account. There are 2 options for setting up a subdomain.
Note, different domain registration providers use different steps and portals to allow for management of your domains however the terminology used below is industry standard. Please consult with your domain registrar if you have any questions on how to make these changes.
Option 1: Updating the Name Servers for your domain. (PREFERRED METHOD)
Overview: You can change the overall name servers for your domain to use Gliffen’s name servers. This method is a little easier to complete but has the disadvantage of not supporting multiple subdomains or configuring email account for your domain. Gliffen does not offer support for these services through our Duck Soup Tools application.
Process:
- Log into your domain registrar and find the management section for your domain.
- Update your Name Servers to point to the 2 servers indicated on your configuration page.
- Save your Name Server changes.
- Add the domain name to the provided site configuration area in Duck Soup Tools and save your settings.
- Your done. Changes to your DNS file can take some time (24-48 hours). The Duck Soup Tools system will automatically monitor your domain name and once it it active and pointing correctly, your domain will take over as the primary location for your website.
Option 2: Using an A record in your DNS zone file
Overview: This involves changing the DNS zone file for your domain usually supplied by your Domain registrar. The advantage to using this method is that other sub-domains or email addresses can be configured for your domain name separate from the main domain. The disadvantage is that this is a slightly more complex process.
Process:
- Log into your domain registrar and find the DNS zone management section for your domain.
- Create a new “A” record on your DNS zone file that points to the IP address indicated in Duck Soup Tools.
- Save your DNS zone file changes.
