Sitting at your desk all day in an office can be quite frankly boring but also can kill your creativity .. how can we change that? Perhaps just simple things like:

  1. Stand-up during meetings  can actually get the blood flowing and get some motivation in the team going; need more convincing?
  2. Surround yourself with inspiration; tack up magazine articles that struck you, an email you liked, a beautiful photo or two.
  3. Challenge a colleague – tag team with brainstorming ideas, encourage them to try new things with you.
  4. It’s the small things – small-scale innovation is sometimes huge. Just try changing small things in your everyday, like how you sign off on your emails
  5.  Take a moment  and identify with all the things you do without thinking and how you can view them different and accomplishing them differently.
  6. Bring an idea to life – stop talking and start building! Even if it’s a crappy sketch, it’s better than no sketch at all.
  7.  Spark new approaches – by banning words, resources and communication tools you are allowing for your creativity to spark again.
  8. Step outside the office – even if its just a stroll around the block, a little space from the office will help wake up the mind.
  9. Kick-start your day with creativity by feeding your mind with a favorite song, podcast, blog to start the day off on the right foot.
  10. Ask “what would ___ (insert hero here) do?” – keep a list of creative forces. When a problem strikes, take a look at your list and ask yourself what they might do to solve it.

Innovation is seeing the world in different eyes, take a little bit of time out of your day to see them and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Something that we have done here at Gliffen is have “Think Tank Thursdays” – granted they are not all Thursdays, some days are harder to put our heads together with work flowing so steadily. But when we do, we bring to the table new ideas, things we’ve found, proposing new ways of approaching projects, etc. It’s really quite exciting to see what everyone brings to the table. It keeps you on your toes and keeps your mind open to new ways of thinking.
