Use Canva.com to Create Site Branding Designs

These instructions are to help you create site branding like: social media graphics, flyers, posters, etc. using the free resource Canva.com.

  1. Visit canva.com.
  2. If you have used Canva before, login! If not, select the option that best fits your needs.
  3. You will then be directed to a login or sign up page. You can use Facebook or your Google account to make it easier for you.
  4. Then, you can choose to invite your coworkers/team members to your design if you want to collaborate with them. If not, click “Skip inviting team members”.
  5. Next, choose the type of design advertisement you would like to create. If you do not see the option you are looking for, you can select “More Design Types” or just start fresh with “Play with Canva.” For this tutorial, I will be creating a flyer.
  6. Canva will then provide some more specific options to narrow down your design. Choose the option that best suits your goal.
  7. Canva will then bring you to your workspace. This is the arena you will be designing in. On the left hand side are pre-made templates if you would like to select an option you prefer. Once you select a template, you can customize it as much as you like. You do not have to choose a template.
  8. Once you have decided or not decided on a template, you can begin customization. You can click anywhere on pre-typed text to write your own information. You can also add a text box by selecting “Text” inside of the very left hand side column.
  9. I am going to select a pre-made text template I like for my title and place it on the page. At the top of the screen you will see a header where you can change the font, font-size, color, alignment, etc. I will also use this to customize my look. The green “Add a text box” will allow you to start with a fresh text area as well.
  10. The color selector box at the top drops down a color palette. This area controls your background color.
  11. Inside of the “Images” tab in the left hand side column, you can select any stock images or graphics to add to your design. You can also upload your own images inside of the “Uploads” tab.
  12. I will drop our logo in.
  13. From here, just play with graphics, fonts, templates, and images to create the look you are going for! Here’s our final look:
