Some Early Summer Adventures

This is my 3rd year in Jackson Hole and I get so excited for summer time because I know that morel season is just a brief but rewarding time. They pop out of the brush among the Cottonwoods. I feel like a little kid running around looking for these delicious treasures. Two summers ago, we had cooler after cooler full of morels, but this season only a handful. We are hoping to find more this weekend.. I will report back.

Morel Mushroom

I found a morel mushroom!

Sadie loves any excuse to run around with us in the woods. She also loves the unending smells, not to mention the wildlife carcasses laying around.

Chance Meetings: Networking with Entrepreneurs

Last night at The Rose, gathered several entrepreneurs in our community and others from all corners of the country to meet and greet each other. Silicon Couloir (previously known as Table 14) hosts these “Chance Meetings” which are monthly gathering of the region’s entrepreneurs, sharing thoughts about their opportunities and challenges. Along with “2 Minute Drills,” a series of two minute talks about local entrepreneurial efforts. Silicon Couloir supports and connects dedicated entrepreneurs. Their events and resources strengthen the entrepreneurial community.

During the “2 Minute Drills” Trilipiderm, EveryArtist, JH Marketplace and Mountain Roots highlighted themselves and what challenges they have faces so far. It’s refreshing to hear new ideas emerging into new businesses in Jackson. It’s important as a business in Jackson Hole to maintain our connection to our community.

A friend of mine that came with me to the gathering (who happens to be a Jackson Hole native) told me that she wanted to join me because even though she’s from here, she doesn’t feel as if she’s connected with the community. She went away to college and came back to live here to make a life for herself. I personally find it incredibly rewarding to network with others in the area, it gives me a sense of belonging. I have been in Jackson now for nearly 2 years and I feel like I am exactly where I need to be. The people are so welcoming and supportive of one another, no wonder I feel so at home. I am not an entrepreneur but I am a supporter of Gliffen Designs (of course) and a supporter of all businesses in the Jackson Hole area. Our role is pretty prevalent to our clients and I take pride in helping better their brand and help their business succeed.

Creating rounded image corners using CSS3

Border Radius was a concept released with CSS3 that allows you to create rounded corners on objects without the use of the traditional background images. Previously if you wanted to create a box that looks like this:

You would need to create a series of images that would be placed on the various corners which would make it look curved. But not anymore. Now this can be accomplished as easy as this:

.ob{
    -webkit-border-radius: 10px;
    -moz-border-radius: 10px;
    border-radius: 10px;

    /* these properties are just so that you can see the box*/
    background-color:#999;
    width:300px;
    height:100px;
}

But it doesn’t stop there. You can even attach these properties to an image. You can create this effect:

using this code:

img{
    -webkit-border-top-left-radius: 200px;
    -webkit-border-bottom-right-radius: 200px;
    -moz-border-radius-topleft: 200px;
    -moz-border-radius-bottomright: 200px;
    border-top-left-radius: 200px;
    border-bottom-right-radius: 200px;;
}

Start the New Year right..

It’s yet a New Year and it’s best to start the new year off in the right direction!
The gym is packed during the first month of the year; (especially when people get gym memberships for Christmas). With a new year ahead of us, the spirit of making a change for the better is in the air..

What are your goals this year as a business owner?

Some things to think about this year:

  1. Open yourself up to critics online.Review websites are everywhere these days, let your customers have a place to input on your business so you may continue to improve your products/services. ie. Houzz, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Linkedin, Google+
  2. Connect with other entrepreneurs in your area, see what others are tapping into and keep your mind open to new possibilities that you may not have thought of before. ie. Young Professionals of the Tetons, 22 in 21
  3. Stay competitive, educated in your market and staying involved by maintaining your existing business relationships.

Enjoy the New Year and all it’s newness, full of possibilities and enjoy the snow if you got it.. here in Jackson we have some new lovely snow fall!

Happy Friday &
Happy New Year, all!

Your Website and SEO

Websites have evolved quite a lot over the years in functionality and in overall structure. They can fulfill a need for you and your business to not only provide relevant information to your customers but in some cases your website is your business.

Here are some tips on how your website can be all that it can be!

Site Navigation
Your site navigation plays a tremendous role in its overall SEO authority. Steer clear of navigation structures that make it difficult for search engines to crawl, like Flash or JavaScript. Stick with XHTML and CSS (or if you must use images for the navigation, but sure to use ALT tags). Shallower websites are more in favor than websites that have great “depth,” which typically requires lengthy strings of clicks to see every page on your website.

Backlinks
Shallow navigation structures improve your website’s usability, making is easier on your visitors to find what they came for. Making your website more accessible improves your bounce rate and may improve overall average time on the site, which play a further role in SEO rankings.

Websites with depth can benefit from internal backlinking:
- External backlinks – links that point to your website from entirely seperate sites
- Internal backlinks – connections between individual pages within your website

Benefits of Internal backlinks between pages or blog posts:
- Decrease the number of clicks required to access each page of your website
- Internal links offer keyword-rich
- Internal links improve user experience on your website

When you add to new page or blog post, take a moment to think if the readers may be interested in other topics you have covered elsewhere on your website. If this opportunity arises, create internal links within your content that point to these other website pages.

URL Structure
The URL structure of your website plays a very important role on how your site is being “seen” by search engines.

Our URL structure looks something like this:
http://gliffen.com/mobile-website-design.php

- Search engines will look at something like this and because “mobile website design” is being separated by dashes, these keywords will be recognized as separate phrases and because target keywords are being used throughout, it should provide for relevant visitation.

When developing a WordPress site for example, we use the Permalink area to be sure that we use the “post name” option. This helps ensure your website qualifies for full consideration by the search engines.

Is it Winter Yet?

The days are shorter, the weather is getting chiller.. is it winter yet?

Well, it’s getting there, this week alone has a cold front pushing through.. high of 52 degress. All I got to say is, bring it on!

It’s exciting thinking about when the mountains are filled in with snow, cozy winter nights, getting out to enjoy powder days at the resort and in the backcountry. I have only had one winter here so far and I’m pretty pumped for another.
